it is technically my “friday”. WOO HOO!! bright + early tomorrow morning, [J] & I are headed for the
iowa/illinois border. his sister is tying the knot this weekend. and we will be there to partake in the festivities. plus a few other fun things, like going to a chicago cubs game on sunday afternoon.
on friday nights, [J] & I like to have a date night. or a celebration of the work week being over. whichever you’d like to call it.
last week, I convinced him to make the
long 15 minute drive downtown des moines. and drug him to this restaurant + bar I had heard a lot about, mullets. [no that is not a spelling error. mullets; party in the back, business in the front. you got it]. it has an amazing rooftop deck that overlooks the river, the city of des moines, and the iowa cubs baseball stadium. we indulged in food + uber classy beverages. [I’ve never had thee “banquet beer”/coors before]. the food was scrumptious. I love spicy. so I went for a burger stuffed with cheese + jalapenos, topped with smoked jalapeno bacon + barbecue sauce. it’s making my mouth water now. I couldn’t have been happier with our date night destination.
we then went to the diviest dive bar, with the friendliest people and watched the chicago black hawks defeat the LA kings in game 6.
the holiday to shout your love from the rooftops is a mere three days away. and the pressure to not drop the ball is bigger than ever.
I’m not a cynic. I love love. but valentine’s day sets men all over the world up for failure. because expectations are through the roof.
one thing I’m sure of ..
I don’t want flowers. I don’t want flowers. you must repeat if you actually mean it. I’m not saying I don’t want them, but secretly do. whoever thought that was a good idea was crazily mistaken. men
won’t don’t spend the time to read between the lines, just tell them the truth.
[*editor’s note: I like flowers. but not on valentine’s day. any other day, I’ll happily take a bouquet. or two].
personally I love the little, heartfelt gestures. the day should be thoughtful not standard. it should scream “I know you & I know you’ll love this”.
acceptable valentine’s day gifts.
• surprise coffee in bed from a local coffee shop.
• homemade chocolate chip pancakes, in the shape of hearts.
• a love letter on a sticky note.
• dinner & a bottle of wine at home.
• or this coffee mug ..

all I’m saying is be thoughtful. and do something for someone. for the love of love.
and women, if you want your man to do something ..tell him. otherwise you’ll spend the day angry that he didn’t do anything. and he’ll spend the day wondering why you told him not to do anything, but then got mad he didn’t. #OhTheGamesWePlay
when it comes to winter, I prefer to stay in. especially at night. and now, while the weather is still nice, it is the perfect time to prepare my wardrobe, living room, and kitchen. the snowy nights are coming.

nothing over $27.
[don’t forget your man].
a bottle of peppermint schnapps is always a good idea too. delicious in hot cocoa. [and I’ll be sharing a few cocktail recipes that feature it]. whether we like it or not, the holidays
and winter are sneaking up.
