das boot in des moines.

whenever the husband + I have out-of-town guests, or we’re thirsty, we find ourselves at the hessen haus. it is downtown des moines. and it’s a gem!

I may be the type of person that labels a place “a gem” based solely on the fact they sell german beer by the liter. or the boot, if you’d prefer. but there’s so much more to this place.

if you’re looking for a neat atmosphere ..this place is housed in an old train station, decked out fully as a german bier hall. tell your friends, it’s cultural. then have a liter of franziskaner [my favorite] or a german beer of your choosing, that’s cultural too. believe me, they have a lot of options.

if you’re looking for authentic german food ..look no further. if you’re not ..look no further. I can almost guarantee there is something for everyone here. can you say armadillo eggs? I cannot get enough of these bacon-wrapped chicken tenders, filled with jalapenos + cheese.

want to have some fun? just wait for a train to go by on the tracks outside ..$3 jagermeister + apfelkorn. shots, shots, shots everybody! or pass the boot with your friends. or your husband’s family, like I did last summer. it really brings a family together.

and for those who measure a successful summer based on how many outdoor patios they visited ..add the hessen haus to your list. I measure a good time by the company, the sunshine + the size of my beer. just kidding. ish.

let me extend an offer ..if you find yourself in des moines on saturday in the summer, I will happily be your tour guide. we’ll take a trip to the downtown farmers market + cap it off with an afternoon spent on the patio, passing a boot filled with german beer, eating armadillo eggs. sound good?

see some of my other des moines favorites ..

like an ideal des moines weekend, a farm-fresh breakfast burrito, the one-of-a-kind zombie burger, a latin-inspired restaurant called malo, the state fair, my list of 10 must-do’s in des moines.

fashion // farmers market.

all saturday’s during the summer should start with a trip to the farmer’s market. should, not always. [occasionally my love for sleep gets in the way]. the earlier you arrive, the better. you beat the heat, the crowds, and get the best pick of produce. my trips always start with a stop at java joe’s for a large iced coffee. from there, I’m on a mission for the freshest fruits + veggies. and I rarely leave without a bouquet of pretty flowers.

a short summer dress is essential. it’s effortless [which I need before my morning coffee]. it’s quick [because I wake up minutes before I must leave]. it’s breezy. and it’s fun.

another essential, a crossbody bag. your hands need to be free for your iced coffee + fresh produce. bring your own reusable bag or basket for your purchases.

sorry I’m not sorry that I couldn’t put my iced coffee down long enough to snap these photos. it was early. ish.

happy monday.

wedding // guest list.

our wedding invitations have arrived. and our dining room table is currently being hidden under mountains of paper + envelopes.

my mom is graciously making her way to des moines this weekend to join [J] & I’s production line. we have agreed to pay her in bloody marys + breakfast burritos at the first downtown farmer’s market of the year. which just so happens to be taking place this weeknd. [and I’m so excited].

we’re slowly making wedding planning progress. very little no thanks to me. basically [J] is a saint.

I need to know ..

is it common to put the guest first in every decision you make for your wedding? I’m struggling to find the balance between what I want & what I feel is best for our guests. in truly, every decision. where we’re registering. if I’m having a bridal shower [because I don’t want my guests to feel they have to travel twice]. if cake or cupcakes would be more enjoyable. you get the drift. I just need to know if it’s normal.

obviously [J] & I are beyond thankful + blessed to have so many amazing people in our lives. and we want them to not only celebrate our marriage by our side, but also enjoy themselves. but when do you draw the line?
