life // pool day essentials.

it’s almost memorial day weekend. and here in iowa that means, the pool is opening!

I don’t know what I have against lounging poolside during the warm summer days, but I rarely ever do it. this year, I’m giving myself no choice. I already packed my bag. as if I was expecting a child, and must rush to the hospital at any unexpected moment. but this is my pool bag. that will remain sitting in our coat closet, ready for that unexpected day that the sun is shining & I am not busy.

my snow white skin needs to be introduced to the sun before it visits the dominican republic. basically I don’t want to be ghostly white or a lobster on my wedding day. please.

what’s in my bag.

bikini top + bottom // the fewer the straps the better. crazy tan lines you’re not my friend.

sunscreen // an absolute must for snow white me.

insulated beverage holder // sometimes it’s for water, sometimes it’s not.

the brightest nail polish you can find // I can get quite bored sitting poolside for hours.

beach towel // make sure you remember this one.

romance novel // because this is the ultimate poolside activity.

beach bag // to carry everything for you.

am I forgetting anything? what’s in your pool/beach bag?

happy thursday.

beauty // makeup novice.

when it comes to makeup, I can use all the help I can get.

my daily routine takes a total of 5 minutes, if that. and includes a light concealer under my eyes [& any blemishes], maybe powder, blush, mascara. the end.

so when angie, a mary kay beauty consultant, reached out to me to test some products, I didn’t even hesitate. my favorite: she gave me tips + tricks and was more than happy to guide me on what was best for my skin tone & eye color.

I have a thing for nail polish. and this carefree coral officially tops my list. it may actually be the perfect wedding day shade. I love it that much. it’s bright + beachy, yet pretty + sophisticated.

when it comes to lip color application because I really struggle in this area, angie recommended the “satin lips” set; it comes with a mask and a balm. the lip mask removes that dry layer of skin to reveal a nice smooth lip to apply color to. and also helps keep your lip color on longer. I want to wear much more lip color this summer, so I’m putting this in my order.

she is generously offering 10% off to all of my lovely readers. just mention “chelsea10“. view all the products here. and send her an email [angiestanke@marykay.com] with your order.

my mom is coming to town this weekend, so we’ll be putting our order in together.

happy thursday.

how to: at home manicure.

my finger nails are my favorite accessory. hands down. [pun intended].

keeping them pretty + polished takes work, but I make my best effort to make it happen. as a child I fell victim to nail biting especially when nervous, I found the only remedy was to keep my nails painted. because habits are hard to break, but chipped nails are worse. and I’d leave my nails alone only if they were painted. the routine has kind of stuck with me into adulthood.

7 steps to the best at home manicure.

1 // remove nail polish with 100% acetone nail polish remover. it gets off any polish [glitter included] so much faster + easier. once you go acetone, you won’t go back.

2 // file your nails to your desired shape. I tend to keep mine fairly square-shaped.

3 // lather your hands up with lotion.

4 // use an eyeliner brush, dip in acetone, and clean excess lotion off your nails.

5 // paint a base coat on each of your nails. I am a fan off essie’s grow stronger.

6 // two coats of your favorite nail polish. lately I’m loving: get in expresso lane.

7 // finish with a top coat. essie’s good to go is the only one I’ll use. it provides a glossy shine + it dries so fast. I can be a bit impatient.

my go to winter polishes.
