you fill + fill your weekend with plans, and the next time you open your eyes ..it’s monday. shoot! thankfully, the
underestimated snow storm that made its way through iowa this weekend has caused my office to delay opening until noon today. [I think I can drink enough coffee + ready myself to take on monday by noon].
so back to the jam-packed weekend ..
a snow storm was rumored to hit des moines at 5PM on saturday, continuing through sunday. and leaving behind it over a foot of snow. but we would not let it ruin our plans ..the show must go on!
we had tickets for the blue ribbon bacon festival. it is exactly what it sounds + quite the spectacle in des moines. they had so much to see + do, but more importantly ..restaurants from all over the metro serving their finest bacon creations. I could not believe my eyes + ears. the creativity was impressive. and although, I’m not the most adventurous foodie ..when in rome.
above: grilled cheese on a stick with bacon + spicy chili, made by the cheese shop of des moines. below: bacon banana scotcharoos, made by gusto pizza.
above: bacon ice cream, made by the machine shed. below: a handmade ice cream sandwich molasses bacon cookies + vanilla ice cream, made by thelma’s treats.
above: bacon-wrapped pork wings, made by big city burgers & greens. below: bacon nutz [bacon-wrapped bacon sausage], made by big fork brands.
we had so much fun and will certainly be going again next year. this is a must-attend in my book.
I hope all of your weekends went by at a much slower than mine. and were filled with fun, friends, entirely too much food grazing, a little super bowl action, and A LOT less snow.
mid late january and I can say I am over my winter shoe collection. the same three boots on repeat.
but as most of the country heard loud & clear the past few days, winter is far from over.
I rarely buy snow boots. it feels like I’m giving into winter, and we can’t have that. but when I do, I couldn’t be happier. story time: when I moved to NYC, I didn’t own a pair of rain boots. [they weren’t a
‘thing’ necessity in Iowa]. so walking to work, I’d have to dodge the puddles. sometimes wandering well into the middle of the road. HUGE PUDDLES! finally I said enough is enough, and I purchased a bright pink pair. guess what I did? jump & walk through every puddle from then on.
that’s kind of what snow boots are for.
don’t attempt to avoid the snow
that’s everywhere, show it who is boss with a great pair of boots. and walk right through it.
[*editor’s note: that could be a life lesson too. just walk right through it].
now let’s find us a pair ..
1 // copper zip-up boots. 2 // red earth snow boots.
3 // leather + faux fur mocha snow boots. 4 // short snow boots.
5 // scrunch boot. 6 // rain boots. that I rock in the snow.
7 // faux fur black boots. 8 // thermoball pull-on bootie.
I had every intention of filming a snow boot style post. and I still do. but when I was ready to film it, there was very little snow on the ground. thankfully the ground is now covered. so look for me in a pair of snow boots
out in the freezing cold next week!
after 110+ friday’s of the week in photos, I’ve decided it’s time to retire it and start something new.
the idea behind it is to share four things I’ve collected throughout the week. it can be anything from a quote I’ve held onto, a recipe I’m loving, exciting life events, a lesson I’ve learned, and of course ..photographs. I want it to become less of ‘recap from my week’ and more of a takeaway for us all.
1 // which brings me to the
new finally defined direction of little lessons in a big city. throughout the past few years, I’ve been working to transform this creative space from a personal journal to a full-blown lifestyle blog. I don’t want it to be necessarily about my day-to-day, but rather a collection of things that make each day better. many people start the new year with huge, often times unattainable goals, but I’m asking all of you to shift your focus with me in 2014.
and those little things will be what you can find on LLinaBC. a collection of how to’s, do-it-yourself projects, recipes, fashion + beauty tips, and the occasional life update.
you don’t have to make drastic changes to better your life, it’s all about the little things. like a handwritten note from a friend, a good glass of wine, a new piece of artwork, or a successful DIY project.
2 // pretty, little snowflakes. aren’t they beautiful?
3 // santa put this water bottle in my stocking and it has not left my side yet. I’ve definitely been drinking more water. and even eating quite a bit healthier. I have pictures of wedding dresses + bikinis dancing in my head. only 9 months to go.
4 // cheers to making 2014 the best year yet.
have the best weekend.
