I have a love affair with the small town of galena, IL. it is a place my parents would take me as a kid. but I’ve only become fonder of as an adult. any chance to stop, I do.
thankfully, [J] & I had to take the “long way home” on sunday [coming back from chicago], and galena was conveniently in our path. I
somehow convinced [J] that I was absolutely starving & we needed to stop for dinner just about the time we approaching galena. and I got my wish, we dined at the galena brewing company. and took a brief walk down the main street. [even pulled off the highway for a quick landscape snapshot].
it is literally magical.
if you have not been to galena, IL ..it is time to start planning your trip. there are great restaurants, wineries, breweries, amazing shopping, historical landmarks galore, beautiful scenery. even better, it’s great during all seasons.
[especially in the fall, when the leaves are changing].
[J] & I have spent our last two weekends in the car + in chicago.
it’s [just over] five hours from des moines, IA to [J]’s family in downtown chicago. so I am not exaggerating when I say we’ve had our fair share of quality couple time and refills of iced coffee.
two weekends ago, we were celebrating [J]’s sister’s wedding. and this weekend, it was for the father’s + some quality family time. as much fun as we’ve had, I think it’s safe to say we’re looking forward to some quiet, relaxing at-home time. [assuming that’s what is in store for us ..lately, plans have been popping up like crazy. and we’ve spent very little time sitting still. that may or may not have to do with a large event coming up in four short months. ahem, wedding].
there were 4 trips over the mississippi river. a stop at eataly. six doughnuts consumed from glazed and infused. a trip to see the chicago cubs play. two fireworks shows. and a large wedding. plus more cocktails than I can count on both hands.
there is not enough coffee in the world to get me through today.
during my radio silence last week, I was in omaha, nebraska. for four days of work training.
it just so happened, I arrived in town a mere thirty minutes before the tornado sirens went off. the city took shelter. and I took to the bar. [I get extreme weather anxiety. and I sure as heck was not staying in my high in the sky hotel room]. who else thinks I should be able to expense my sunday night, braving the tornado cocktails? I do. well, that’s how the trip started.
[*editor’s note: a tornado was spotted west of omaha. we just experienced 80 mph winds + thunderstorms].
days were spent in a marriott conference room. and nights were for discovering omaha.
from hotel room wine glass improvising, to the joy of changing out of my work clothes & into jeans, to delicious dinners, and a trip to the zoo. all captured by my phone.
I am happy to be home and back to my so-called routine. just as things are progressively getting crazier around these parts. it seems surreal to say we are in ‘wedding planning crunch time,’ with just over 4 months to go. summer is right around the corner. we have trips + celebrations on the books. I’m just excited
and a little how the heck am I going to get everything done?.
