hidden gems.

on day six of our road trip, we left yellowstone national park and made our way to salt lake city, utah. where we spent the weekend with our friends, ashley & drew.

instead of dreading the long hours in the car between destinations, we began to look forward to them. some of the most amazing things we saw were not “penciled” into our itinerary, but places we stumbled upon.

one of those places was jackson hole, wyoming.

we had to stop. no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

iced coffee, of course.

and it was off to salt lake city ..

[which we ate & drank our way through].

first night: dinner at the {red iguana}. famous for their mole. and now I know why – yum!!

to begin the next day: take-out breakfast quesadilla [if I had the choice, I’d start every day with this]. from the {blue plate diner}.

I truly felt as if we were being let in on a secret when we arrived at the {sundance resort}. it is so quaint & tucked away. and a place I will never forget visiting.

[the area is owned by robert redford, and is where the sundance film festival got its start].

we enjoyed cocktails at sundance’s bar: the owl bar.

the next morning: breakfast at {ruth’s diner}.

and two pictures of downtown salt lake city before we headed off to colorado ..

and just in case you’re new to the party, here’s a quick recap of our trip [orrr what I’ve shared on the blog so far]: day one we drove through the entire state of south dakota [and made a couple stops] before we reached our first destination, mount rushmore. {read more}. minor detail: we got engaged on the first night of our trip. {read more}. on day two we left south dakota for wyoming. where we set up camp at devils tower. and it hailed. {read more}. on day three we made it to montana just in time to cook dinner over a campfire & go to bed. on day four, we explored little big horn battlefield before heading off to our next destination. {read more}. and then on day five & six, we were in complete awe of yellowstone national park. {read more}.

there’s still eight more days of trip left. [in blog terms: 3 ish more posts].

happy monday.

I turn 26 tomorrow.

american beauty.

the majority of day four & all of day five of our trip was spent at yellowstone national parkhands down one of the most breathtaking places in our country. [based on my opinion].

we entered the park through the northeast entrance. and our campsite was near the south entrance. little did we know, it was 86 miles away. going a maximum of 35MPH, that’s when buffalo weren’t in the middle of the road.

but I’ll just shhhhh and let the pictures do the talking.

[warning: so many buffalo shots. sorry I’m not sorry].

me: why is traffic going so slow?

[J]: a buffalo is leading the way.

he was totally giving us the evil eye.

just in case you’re not sick of hearing about [J] & I’s trip yet ..

on day one, we drove from des moines to mount rushmore. making a couple stops along the way. {read more}. then, that night we got engaged. no big deal. {read more}. on day two, we left south dakota & headed to wyoming to set up camp at the base of devils tower. which we explored on day three {read more}.

after hiking around devils tower, we got in the car and continued our road trip to montana.

and set up camp. just in time to watch the sunset.

the next morning it was breakfast over the fire, as usual.

and off we went to the little bighorn battlefield.

which is incredibly amazing. and oh so important to our country’s history.

the reader’s digest version: it took place in june 25-26, 1876. and was the U.S. army battling against the native american tribes, who were resisting pressure from the government to relocate to reservations.

after some inspiring history, it was time to get back on the road ..

destination: yellowstone national park.

but what we didn’t expect ..was to have some of thee most beautiful scenery along the way.

history buff // LLinaBC.com

sweet little towns, tucked in the valleys of massive mountains.

history buff // LLinaBC.com

and winding roads, going up the side of said mountains. [I drove].

but with thee most breathtaking scenery.

history buff // LLinaBC.com

around each turn, we said “it can’t get any prettier than this” ..so we’d park the car, get out, and snap a couple photos. but without fail ..it always got better.

and without question, one of the most entertaining parts of our trip ..just so happened to be when there was an “open range”. and road signs would say “caution: animals on the road”. and you would come around the corner, and see this ..

I guess when you’re driving hours & hours across the country, it doesn’t take much to entertain you. just beautiful scenery & cows on the road.

cannot wait to share our time at yellowstone. next week.

are you sick of trip recaps yet?

happy wednesday.
